Which language(s) do you currently speak? If you could learn only one other language, what would you choose, and why?

I speak English (American style), of course. I can read and speak some German. I'd love to learn Finnish, it's a lovely language, especially when sung, and it's the closest real language to Quenya. I'd also like to learn classical Farsi and Chinese so I can read Rumi and Lao Tsu in their originals. :-)

What’s your favorite movie quote of all time?

Good grief, too many too list! Why do these questions assume people just have a single favorite?

But here are some quotes I like (just a few ):

"Boring conversation anyway"

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women."

"I have crossed oceans of time to find you"

"I know"

"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!"

"I would relax... I would sit on my ass all day... I would do nothing."

"We get caught laundering money, we're not going to white-collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to federal POUND ME IN THE ASS prison."

"As the leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca, I am an influential and respected man."

"Bacon tastes good. Pork chops taste good"

"We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

"I'm the foot f*cking master!"

What one film do you think everyone should see?

Writer's Block: Role model

Is there any character from a novel or film that serves as a role model to you? What kind of advice do you think she or he would give you regarding any major issues you're facing right now?

I think everyone wishes they were as cool as Han Solo!

Actually, as far as fictional characters go, while there are some characters I like a lot (Aragorn, Gandalf, Han Solo, Conan, etc), I don't consider them role models. But there are plenty of non-fiction characters that I consider "role models": Isaac Asimov, Richard Feynman, Ray Harryhausen, John Williams, David Gilmour, and so on.

As for giving me advice on major issues, ummm... well, if I were struggling with, say, quantum electrodynamics, Richard Feynman would be the first person I'd go to!

How has technology’s constant presence affected your (or your child’s) education?

That's hard to say, since I stopped going to school in the 80s and the "constant presence" back then was only TV and radio. However, I took a couple of online courses recently through Berklee College and that was a fun and rewarding experience, as I did not need to worry about scheduling time in my day for attending classes and the only obligation was to submit weekly projects for grading. Would love to do more of this kind of thing, whether for music or for art/animation.

We spend time together online! I can sit on my computer and [info]humanpacifier can sit on hers across the room and we can chat on IM all evening! It's great! And when I need to call [info]nemecide down for supper, I don't need to yell up the stairs, I can just send her an email or IM... or even send her a text message on my phone.

How has the Internet evolved to meet your needs since you started using it?

Can't say the Internet has evolved to meet my needs, but rather I have changed the way I use the Internet based on the technology and capabilities that have developed over the past couple of decades. For instance, streaming video was barely feasible 10 years ago and you can stream video to your cellphone now! VoIP was emerging technology 10 years ago and is becoming fairly ubiquitous in many areas (not to mention it provides me with a paycheck!)

How have the ways you used the Internet changed over the years? How did you use it ten or fifteen years ago compared to how you use it now?

Hard to say, I've been online since the early 90s... I still use it to check email, web surf, etc. Blogs were ubiquitous back in the 90s so I guess that's one thing that is different. And stuff like Youtube, the technology just wasn't there for supporting streaming video or audio very well. Back in the 90s. except for Linux, software delivery via the Internet wasn't very prevalent and now just about everyone gives you the option of downloading software rather than getting it on CD or DVD. I do like that quite a bit.

What are your feelings towards smoking? What rights do you think smokers and non-smokers should have?

Submitted By [info]croses

I think the "right" to breathe reasonably clean air supersedes any "right" for anyone to make the air unhealthy. I used to be a smoker many years ago and think it's a nasty habit now, and hate going into clubs where the smoke is so thick you can barely see and you come home and smell of cigarettes. If you want to poison your lungs, go for it, but you shouldn't be making others participate without their consent. Smoking is a privilege, not a right. I am glad many jurisdictions in the DC area have now banned it from public places. I'd like to see tobacco products taxed even more heavily, maybe it can be used to offset public healthcare costs.

Fer crying out loud, this is like the 3rd or 4th Writer's Block question about shopping, and they are all more or less variations on the same question. Couldn't these have been consolidated into one question?
